July 12/23 19:45 pm - Team Canada Holds Onto Lead at Tour de l'Abitibi

Posted by Editoress on 07/12/23

Team Canada's Stage 1 winner of Tour de l'Abitibi, Ethan Powell, may have lost his overall lead on Stage 2, but his team mate Jonathan Hinse took up the slack by winning the stage to make sure the Brown Jersey stayed in the team's possession. Hinse jumped from third overall to first with his win. Alejandro Che (Team USA) finished second in the sprint, with Paul Picard from Team France taking third.

The very active 125. 6 kilometre stage between Rouyn-Noranda to Amos (Via Poularies) was marked by a breakaway made up of 18 riders. Their gap grew to 1:55 in front of the peloton. The leaders arrived in downtown Amos to compete in a wild sprint for the stage and the time bonuses.

In addition to the Brown Jersey of overall race leader, Jonathan Hinse was awarded the Blue Jersey as Best Young Rider for the second day in a row. Paul Picard moves into the Orange Jersey (Points), while Alex Bouchard (Team Canada) will start Stage 3 in the Polka Dot Jersey (Climber). Picard remains in second overall at six seconds, tied with Powell.

Stage 3, sponsored by Eldorado Gold Québec, and Stage 4, sponsored by Canadian Malartic Partnership will both take place on Thursday, July 13th. Stage 3 will be a ten kilometre individual time trial, followed a 57. 5 kilometre road stage starting and finishing in Malartic.
